Women Thrive Worldwide
Yesterday I attended a presentation at the Clinton School by Ritu Sharma, the founder/CEO of an organization called "Women Thrive Worldwide."
1 in 3 women is likely to be a victim of violence. When they surveyed women around the world the results were staggering. One of the questions they asked was, "When does your husband have the right to beat you?" According to Ritu's presentation, 80% of women responded that they deserved to be beaten if they BURNED THE FOOD and even more said their husbands had the right to beat them if they left the house alone. Clearly, we have a far way to go with women's rights when women themselves don't even know that they deserve human rights.
One thing that she recommended to women is to DEMAND to be treated WELL by all of the men in your life. That is something we can all do. I left feeling extremely fortunate and thankful for my wonderful, gentle, giant of a husband. Can you imagine fearing the men we should love the most? I can't! So, give your man a hug and thank him- whether it be your husband, boyfriend, brother, or father. They all play a role in the rights that we take for granted as women in the US.
